N-Acetyl-Cysteine gives cysteine, a sulphur amino acid that has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant actions.
It is required to form glutathione, another potent anti-oxidant that prevents free radical damage from toxins such as alcohol, pollution and cigarette smoke. All cells contain glutathione, which is a simple molecule made from three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine. Glutathione acts as an important anti-oxidant in the body, meaning it helps to fight free radicals. These are molecules that can damage your body's cells including the tiny blood vessels at the back of the eye and the oil-secreting eyelid glands.
Glutathione can be easily consumed in our diet as it is found in high concentrations in the family of cruciferous vegetables. The most potent source of glutathione is Brussels sprouts. Others include cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choi, cress and turnips. A supplement may help those who wish to supplement their dietary intake.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine might help treat degenerative diseases, meaning those conditions that get progressively worse, by protecting healthy cells from damage.
Recommended Intake: One to three capsules a day before food or as professionally directed.
