James and Michelle Sutton from Butterflies Eyecare recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary in business with a 'blind' driving event with fellow Banbury Chamber of Commerce members Base Performance Simulators.
Their business supporters and friends enjoyed a drive around a race track in a simulator with the car and track branded with their logos. Then they were asked to repeat it wearing glasses that impaired their sight to show how poor vision affects performance. The glasses represented common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and visual field loss. There were resulting crashes into the barriers and skids off the tracks!
As an optician with a family history of macular degeneration, James distributes the Viteyes range of eye health supplements to the NHS on prescription and to opticians, pharmacies and consumers.
The joint event raised £540.00 for Gift of Sight, a dynamic eye health charity based at Southampton Hospital Eye Unit. Every year, ground-breaking research is published by macular degeneration specialist Prof Andrew Lotery and his team supported by Gift of Sight donations. Every year, James and Michelle attend their research update and are impressed by both the scale and quality of the research, including the recent discovery of a link between the pathology of macular degeneration and dementia.
James Sutton is a Banbury based optician with a family history of macular degeneration who 10 years ago co-founded Butterflies Eyecare (www.butterflies-eyecare.co.uk) with his pharmacist wife Michelle to offer a comprehensive choice of eye health products and in response to requests from the public. Now is the time to check if your prescription goggles have survived the winter at the bottom of your swim bag, or if you can still see clearly through the lenses. With summer on its way, you may want to think about changing from clear to tinted or even mirrored lenses.
Well it's a hello to summer sunshine at last. Now's the time to say goodbye to winter holidays on the slopes and pack away your skis and skiing mask. However, if you are anything like us you are already planning your summer holiday.
