If your Healthcare Professional has identified nickel as the possible cause of your contact dermatitis, it is important to avoid contact with metal objects that may contain nickel.

Chemo Nickel test is an easy one-step method to detect nickel in metal objects. You can test a variety of metal objects that you may come into contact with, in your home or work environment, for example: keys, hooks, zips, jewellery, coins, kitchen utensils, door and drawer handles, paper clips, stationery and screws in glasses.
By identifying objects that contain nickel, and subsequently could be a trigger for your contact dermatitis, you will be able to know items to avoid, replace or cover up.

Wood, plastic, gold and stainless steel are usually suitable alternatives when looking for replacement products that do not contain nickel.

Always read the label.

Form: The product is packaged in a plastic cylindrical container with a flip-top-cap containing the test solution two cotton swabs and printed instructions for use. The test solution is contained in a glass bottle with a dropper insert and screw on cap.

How to use:
Always read the instructions for use provided with the product.

Instructions

  1. Put a few drops of the solution onto the tip of a cotton swab to moisten it.
  2. Rub the metal surface of the suspected object rigorously for up to 1 minute with the cotton tip.
  3. Examine the cotton tip for a change in colour from white to reddish-pink. A colour change of this nature indicates the presence of nickel.

The Chemo Nickel test consists of an ammonia-based solution containing Dimethylglyoxime (DMG). DMG produces a bright, reddish-pink insoluble salt when it comes into contact with nickel.

Hazards:
Keep away from children.

Chemo Nickel Test should only be used on metal objects. If the metal object being tested has a coating (e.g. varnish), the coating could be dissolved by the Chemo Nickel Test.

Always use Chemo Nickel Test in a well-ventilated area.

In case of contact with the skin, wash skin with water and soap then rinse thoroughly. Immediately remove any clothing soiled by the product.

I know it as 'spot nickel test' and is more descriptive but as long as it works I am happy

I have (SNAS) Systemic Nickel Allergy Syndrome, which means all metals have to be checked for nickel content and this spot testing kit has been my best friend since 2007, when I was diagnosed as being exposed to high content nickel in spectacles I was prescribed.

If you wear high nickel content sunglasses as I did, the sweat produced naturally in the hot sun comes into contact with the high content nickel against the skin and forms an acid, that, once is in the system cannot be removed or treated.

I cannot touch nickel without being affected with swollen, itching, burning, red, sore eyes, dry flakey skin, and a feeling of nasty toxins in my system. My eyes were the point of contact so no matter what part of my body touches the nickel, the AFFECT IS ALWAYS MY EYES first.

This dreadful reaction, depending on severity, prevents me from looking like myself, it makes me look like elephant mans wife. I do not sleep well when affected, I feel drugged and very unwell indeed.

At home we have had to test everything, hooks, zips, studs etc on clothing, metal on bags and purses etc. All handles and metal knobs in my home have been replaced twice over the 18 years I have suffered with this. All kitchen utensils, cutlery, pans and equipment, everything have to be nickel free.

We are still finding new things to test constantly and would not be able to visit family or friends or go on holiday without this spot testing kit.

On holiday my husband tests everything before I can start to…
