Unlike other supplements for thyroid eye disease, Thyro Eye Caps are a dietary supplement which combine selenium and vitamin D. Selenium is a naturally occurring trace element, and vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid. This combination has been developed by UK-based ophthalmic (eye) surgeons.
By fighting free radicals, selenium is thought to play an important role in all functions of the eye. Free radicals can cause cataracts and therefore healthy amounts of selenium intake can protect the lens of the eye and prevent or delay cataract formation. The thyroid gland has the highest concentration of selenium of any organ in the human body.
It plays a very important role in the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland, which in turn regulates many internal activities such as digestion and food absorption, body temperature control and even mood. Therefore, a healthy selenium intake is vital for maintaining thyroid and overall bodily health.
It is particularly important for those suffering from an underactive thyroid, overactive thyroid, or Graves' disease as these have been associated with low selenium levels.
Vitamin D has been linked to eye health in many ways and is thought to support the eye in several different conditions. Specifically, it’s role in inflammation may help support the eyes where thyroid problems also exist.
