I was misled into thinking that lutein and zeaxanthin were effective for wet macular degeneration. I now find that the NHS does not prescribe or recommend these products because "there is not enough evidence that they work".

I would like to give you a bit more background about why we distribute Viteyes.The anti-VEGF eye injections are the recommended treatment for wet macular degeneration.
The AREDS2 (Age Related Eye Disease Study) clinical trial showed that lutein and zeaxanthin in combination with high dose vitamins C & E and zinc can slow the progression of dry macular degeneration.
We have a dedicated website to the research here;
https://www.areds2.org.ukThe NHS makes prescribing decisions based on NICE guidelines and they have made recommendations for further robust research here;
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng82/chapter/Recommendations-for-researchIn addition, the NHS no longer prescribes medicines that can be bought over the counter such as supplements, eye drops, anti-histamines to reduce the annual drugs expenditure.
However, after a family member was diagnosed over 20 years ago, we felt, as an optician and pharmacist-owned family business, that trying and then distributing a supplement was worthwhile (as do many ophthalmologists in hospital eye departments).We have over collected thousands of positive reviews over this time and I do hope the research update we attended from Gift of Sight, found in the newsletters section reassures you that valuable and much needed research continues in this area.

The zinc free option is very welcome for people who are taking other supplements which also contain zinc. Be aware of zinc overload!
